Overview

Journey to the furthest eastern reach of Hong Kong's waters with the Tung Ping Chau Geological Wonders Cruise. This immersive multi-day voyage transports guests to a remote crescent-shaped island renowned for its otherworldly rock formations, vibrant marine life, and striking multi-layered sedimentary cliffs. Formed from siltstone and mudstone millions of years ago, Tung Ping Chau feels entirely disconnected from the modern world. This overnight expedition is ideally tailored for nature enthusiasts, photographers, and anyone seeking to explore one of Hong Kong's dramatic UNESCO Global Geopark treasures.

The Experience

Day 1: Leaving Victoria Harbor in the early morning, the cruise charts a northeast course, passing through the sweeping Tolo Channel and out into the remote waters of Mirs Bay. As Tung Ping Chau emerges on the horizon, guests will immediately notice its distinctive flat profile and unique wave-cut platforms. After anchoring, a guided trek explores the island’s famous coastal trail. Marvel at the dramatic multi-layered shale strata at Kang Lau Shek, two towering sea stacks guarding the island's eastern point, and walk across the massive, wave-eroded rock shelf known as Lung Lok Shui (Dragon Diving into the Water). As dusk falls, enjoy a serene evening at anchor under some of the clearest, unpolluted night skies in the region.

Day 2: Wake up early to catch a spectacular sunrise over the open ocean before enjoying a relaxed morning. Tung Ping Chau is surrounded by a protected Marine Park boasting exceptionally clear waters and thriving coral communities. Guests can spend the morning snorkeling right off the beach, uncovering colorful marine life just beneath the surface. Before heading back, explore the island’s historic, largely abandoned stone villages and the historic Tin Hau Temple, built by early fishermen. The afternoon concludes with a peaceful, scenic return cruise back to the city.

Dining & On-Board Hospitality

All meals are freshly prepared on board by our crew. Day 1 begins with a fresh breakfast spread during the morning sail, followed by a packed artisan lunch to enjoy while exploring the island’s geo-trails. In the evening, an elegant multi-course dinner highlighting locally sourced ingredients is served on the deck. Day 2 features a hearty breakfast and a light afternoon tea as the vessel leisurely cruises back to Victoria Harbor. Complimentary refreshments, coffee, and a selection of beers and wines are available throughout the trip.

Important Information

This multi-day cruise operates bi-weekly, highly dependent on weather and sea conditions due to the remote nature of Mirs Bay. Sturdy, high-traction walking shoes are essential for navigating the island's shale rock trails. Guests are advised to bring swimwear, a towel, sun protection, and a light jacket for cooler evening sea breezes. Private, air-conditioned cabins are fully equipped for a restful overnight stay.
