The Experience

Departing Victoria Harbor in the early morning, the cruise sails westward as the city skyline gradually gives way to Lantau's lush, mountainous coastline and unspoiled bays. The first stop ashore is Tai O, one of Hong Kong's oldest fishing villages perched on the island's western tip. Often called the Venice of Hong Kong, Tai O is a network of narrow waterways lined with traditional stilt houses built by the Tanka boatpeople generations ago. Guests explore its winding lanes, browse stalls of locally dried seafood and handmade goods, and sample the village's famous fish balls and shrimp paste. With luck, the rare Chinese White Dolphins may be spotted in the surrounding waters.

From Tai O, guests travel onward to Ngong Ping for the centerpiece of the day: the Tian Tan Buddha. Standing 34 meters tall above a lotus throne on Lantau's mountain heights, this awe-inspiring bronze statue is one of the highly recognizable landmarks in all of Asia. Guests ascend its 268 steps for panoramic views stretching across mountains, coastline, and open sea. Adjacent to the statue, the Po Lin Monastery, a living Buddhist sanctuary founded in 1906, offers a serene counterpoint, its halls fragrant with incense and rich with centuries of devotion. The return journey sails along Lantau's southern shore past Mui Wo Bay before heading back to the city.
