The Experience

Departing Victoria Harbor in the morning, the cruise sails southwest through open waters, arriving at Cheung Chau's distinctive harbor, a scene of gently rocking fishing junks, drying nets, and the easy bustle of an active fishing community that has been working these waters for centuries.

Guests come ashore to explore at their own pace, guided by a curated island itinerary. The first stop is the Pak Tai Temple, built in 1783 and one of the oldest Taoist temples in Hong Kong. Dedicated to the God of the Sea and patron deity of the island's fisherfolk, the temple's ornate ceramic-tiled roof and twin golden dragons make it one of Cheung Chau's striking landmarks. It is also the spiritual heart of the island's famous Cheung Chau Bun Festival, an annual celebration inscribed on China's national list of Intangible Cultural Heritage, in which towering bamboo structures are covered with thousands of traditional steamed ping on buns and locals compete in a spectacular midnight bun-scrambling contest.

From the temple, the island opens up for exploration. Guests stroll the lively Praya Street waterfront, browsing dried seafood stalls, independent boutiques, and the snack vendors for which Cheung Chau is celebrated. The island's famous giant fish balls, charcoal-grilled squid, and mango mochi are essential tasting stops. The quieter south side of the island results in Tung Wan Beach, a sandy bay offering a welcome swim and open views of the South China Sea, before the circular island walk reveals scenic coastal paths and cliff lookouts.

This cruise operates daily, weather permitting. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended for the island walk. Cheung Chau is entirely car-free, making it ideal for leisurely exploration on foot. Guests are advised to bring sun protection and a swimsuit if they wish to use the beach. During the Cheung Chau Bun Festival period (annually in April or May), the island is especially vibrant, early boarding is recommended on those dates.
